How this shift differential calculator works

This calculator applies the shift differential percentage to the regular hourly rate, then multiplies the premium and total rates by the number of hours worked.

Shift differential pay = hourly rate x (differential % / 100) x hours worked

It is helpful for estimating night-shift, weekend-shift, or off-hours pay when your employer pays a percentage premium above the base rate.

Examples

Example 1

An hourly rate of $20 with an 8-hour shift and a 10% differential adds $16 in extra pay.

Example 2

A 15% differential on a $24 hourly rate adds $3.60 per hour to the shift.

Example 3

If the differential is 0%, the total shift pay equals the regular shift pay with no added premium.

Frequently asked questions

What if the shift differential is zero?
