How this median calculator works

This calculator sorts your values from lowest to highest and finds the middle point. With an odd count it returns the single middle value, and with an even count it averages the two middle values.

Median = middle value of the sorted list, or average of the two middle values

Use it when you want a middle value that is less affected by very high or very low outliers.

Examples

Example 1

The median of 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 is 20.

Example 2

The median of 3, 5, 8, and 10 is 6.5.

Example 3

The median of -5, 0, and 10 is 0.

Frequently asked questions

Why use the median instead of the average?

The median is often better when a list contains outliers, because one unusually high or low value has less effect on the middle result.

Can I enter decimals?

Yes. Decimals and negative numbers are accepted and sorted normally.

What if there are invalid entries?

Only valid numbers are counted. If there are no valid numbers, the median is undefined.
